Health: Waking Up, Hangovers, Ear Infections
by Stephanie Stahl
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl reports on what really happens when people wake up from a night's sleep, people who have hangovers on the job and a new product on the market to help cure an ear infection.
Morning Risers Disoriented Researchers at the University of Colorado tested people when they woke up in the morning and found that some had mental impairments comparable to intoxication.
This disorientation can last for up to two hours. The researchers say that areas of the brain responsible for problem solving, complex thoughts and emotions may take longer to wake up than other parts of the brain.
Hangovers At Work In other health news, seven percent of American workers drink during the work-day, usually during lunch. According to new research from the University of Buffalo, nine percent have nursed hangovers at work. Researchers say alcohol slows reaction time and impairs decision-making.
According to statistics, people most likely to drink on the job are young, single men, managers, sales-persons, restaurant workers and people in the media.
Cure For Ear Infections Trying to cure your child's painful and uncomfortable ear infections? A new device on the market helps clear fluid build-up in the ear.
EarPopper delivers a constant, controlled, stream of air pressure through the nose. When the patient swallows, the middle ear is cleared and the hearing is restored.
EarPopper is F.D.A. approved, but is only available with a prescription. Doctors warn that the device is not for everyone with an ear infection and its effectiveness is still up debate. The standard treatment for a middle ear infection is antibiotics, and sometimes surgery.
