Tracking Sexual Predators
by Natasha Brown
WILMINGTON, DE (CBS 3) ―
Many parents worry about the potential danger sexual predators pose to their children. Now there is a new tool that makes it easier than ever to know where a convicted sex offender lives. CBS 3's Natasha Brown shows that sometimes the information about who lives in your neighborhood can come as a big surprise.
Al Raybuck could not believe it when CBS 3 told the father of two there is a convicted sex offender living just minutes from his house in Wilmington.
"It definitely puts a different aspect on where you live and the people you live around," said Raybuck, adding, "You really don't know your neighbors."
CBS 3's Natasha Brown showed him a new website called
mapsexoffenders.com. The site locates the homes of convicted sex offenders and shows where they live in respect to your home.
"When they're going to move or send their kids to someone's house they can check it out first," described the website's creator Mark Olsen.
Here is how it works:
Type in your home address and a map pops up. Your home is pinpointed in blue and any sex offenders are in red. Click on any red icon for a photo, name, and address.
All of the information on the site is available because of Megan's Law and comes from government websites.
"The state's records is the official info we're using and we're simply plotting them," said Olsen.
The website's creators have received thousands of e-mails from thankful parents.
"A guy from a particular state who pulled up info who found out his daughter was playing with the children of a sex offender," stated Olsen.
In two Wilmington neighborhoods, just a few miles apart, CBS 3 found a number of red dots, including James Giardinelli who pleaded guilty in 2004 to fourth degree rape of a child.
Many neighbors were concerned.
"I certainly would not want my child in that area without supervision," said concerned mother Deborah Price.
Now you will not get much information in Pennsylvania, where addresses of most sex offenders are not listed.
You can check your neighborhood easily if you live in Delaware or New Jersey and it does not cost a thing.
