Animal Rights Activists Protest Outside NJ Court
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ―
About 70 animal rights activists rallied outside the federal courthouse in Trenton as the trial of six activists was scheduled to begin inside Monday.
The activists on trial are members of a Philadelphia-based group called Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty. They're charged with animal enterprise terrorism, conspiracy and interstate stalking.
The group says the British-based Huntingdon kills 500 animals a day and that criticizing the company is not against the law.
As jury selection was scheduled to begin in side, protesters gathered in the cold, windy weather outside, waving signs and banners.
One banner read, quoting here, "This company profits from the cruel torture and murder of animals," while another read "Puppy killers!"
