Father Accidentally Shoots Son In Leg
(AP)
A man accidentally shot his 13-year-old son in the leg while hunting in Monroe County on Monday, the first day of Pennsylvania's deer season, authorities said.
Rodney Gilbert, 45, of East Stroudsburg, was hunting with his son in the Delaware State Forest in Middle Smithfield Township when a deer walked between the two. Gilbert fired, hitting the boy in the leg, according to Richard Larnerd, the Northeast Regional law enforcement supervisor for the state Game Commission.
The boy was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital and underwent surgery Monday afternoon. His name was not released.
Also on Monday, a 12-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the foot while hunting with an adult near New Freeport in Greene County.
The boy, whose name was withheld by authorities, was being treated at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. The Game Commission said it is investigating whether the rifle had a malfunctioning safety mechanism that contributed to the accident.
